President Dissanayake Opens National Vesak Festival in Matara

The State Vesak Festival officially began on Wednesday, May 27th, in the Matara District, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presiding over the inauguration ceremony. Held at the Midellawala Viharaya in Thihagoda, the national celebration is themed "Abhiththarētha Kalyāṇē" and is set to continue until June 2nd. This year's "Dakshina Prabha" National Vesak Festival is being held across Matara District, featuring distinct Prathipaththi Pooja and Amisa Pooja zones. The event commemorates the Buddhist Era 2570 and carries a message of collective welfare.

New reports confirm the 2026 State Vesak Festival is being held to commemorate the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi. It is also noted that Vesak celebrations are being organized islandwide with the support of various government and non-government institutions, including the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, the Department of Buddhist Affairs, District Secretariats, and Divisional Secretariats, under the guidance of the All Ceylon Sasanarakshaka Mandalaya.
