Sri Lankan Leaders Share Vesak Messages Emphasizing Peace and Buddhist Teachings

New Vesak messages from Sri Lankan leaders have been released. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the enduring relevance of Buddhist teachings for fostering peace, coexistence, and reconciliation, urging the embrace of non-violence, compassion, and loving-kindness, and noting that the Dhamma is founded upon the Four Sublime Virtues. He reiterated that inner spiritual peace is a prerequisite for world peace and that this approach is more relevant today than ever before. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa highlighted the exceedingly rare blessing of human life and that divisions based on race, religion, or caste are ultimately meaningless, citing the ‘Bala Panditha Sutta’ and quoting the Dhammapada: “One is indeed one’s own master; what other savior could there be?”. MP Dilith Jayaweera urged reflection on the Dhamma, noting Vesak commemorates three pivotal milestones and is observed through ‘Amisa Puja’ and ‘Prathipatti Puja’, contributing to a rich cultural heritage.
