Police Probe Cyber Extortion Network Impersonating IGP

Sri Lanka Police have launched an investigation into a sophisticated cyber-threat and extortion network operating under the guise of the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The syndicate reportedly uses the IGP's name and forged signatures to send deceptive emails, aiming to extort money and cause public confusion. The probe, spearheaded by the Special Task Force Cyber Security and Open Source Investigation Unit in collaboration with the Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, seeks to dismantle this operation. Authorities warn that such impersonation tactics could severely damage the reputation of the Police and erode public trust. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid responding to suspicious emails or clicking on any links within them.
