Opposition Files No-Confidence Motion Against Justice Minister Over Prison Deaths

The parliamentary opposition has signed a no-confidence motion against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara. This action stems from the recent unrest at the Negombo Prison, which led to the deaths of prison officers and inmates. Opposition MPs accuse the Minister of failing to fulfill his responsibilities and ensure accountability for the safety of those within the prison system. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and other opposition MPs signed the motion in Parliament on July 10, 2026.
