One Dead, 30 Injured as Bus Plunges into Precipice on Hatton-Dikoya Road

The number of individuals injured in the bus accident has been clarified to 33, down from the previously reported 34. The injured now include the bus conductor, in addition to the driver, adults, and schoolchildren. While some seriously injured individuals were previously reported to be transferred to Kandy Teaching Hospital, new reports indicate that some have been transferred to Nuwara Eliya Hospital for further treatment. The bus was carrying approximately 35 passengers when it veered off the road and plunged about 25-30 feet after reportedly breaking a mound of earth while giving way to another bus.

Police confirm that approximately 40 passengers were on board the private bus when it plunged approximately 35 feet into a precipice, a revised depth from the initial 25-30 feet. The sole fatality has been identified as a 70-year-old male resident of Hatton. The 34 injured individuals, who include the driver, consist of 17 males, 14 females, a 12-year-old male child, and a 4-year-old female child. All were initially admitted to Dikoya Base Hospital, with some later transferred for further treatment. The accident occurred when the bus attempted to give way to another vehicle.
