A passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a precipice this afternoon, April 29, in the Wataragala Estate area on the Hatton-Dikoya main road. The private bus, travelling from Dayagama to Hatton, reportedly plunged approximately 25 feet while attempting to give way to another vehicle. The accident tragically resulted in one person dying and 22 others being hospitalized for injuries. Among the injured were schoolchildren, who are currently receiving treatment at the Dikoya Base Hospital. Police investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The injured now include the bus conductor, in addition to the driver, adults, and schoolchildren. Police confirm that approximately 40 passengers were on board the private bus when it plunged approximately 35 feet into a precipice, a revised depth from the initial 25-30 feet. The sole fatality has been identified as a 70-year-old male resident of Hatton. The 34 injured individuals, who include the driver, consist of 17 males, 14 females, a 12-year-old male child, and a 4-year-old female child. All were initially admitted to Dikoya Base Hospital, with some later transferred for further treatment. The accident occurred when the bus attempted to give way to another vehicle.
