The National Transport Commission (NTC) launched an operation on the night of the 11th, targeting unauthorized passenger transport services. Mobile inspection officers from the NTC, alongside personnel from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal, acted on intelligence regarding illegal bus operations from Colombo Peoples Park to Hatton, Nawalapitiya, and Diagama. During the raid, seven buses were found to be operating without the necessary permits and were also charging passengers fares exceeding the regulated rates. Ms. Sherin Atukorala, Director (Operations) of the NTC, confirmed that these buses have been referred to courts for legal proceedings. This enforcement action comes amidst the festive season, with authorities urging the public to avoid unauthorized transport services.

The Sri Lanka Police have announced that legal action will be taken against bus operators found overcharging passengers, issuing a warning following public complaints. Police stated that under Section 173 of the Motor Traffic Act, bus owners, drivers, or conductors are prohibited from demanding excessive fares. This comes as Police are conducting joint inspections with the National Transport Commission (NTC).

The National Transport Commission (NTC) has urged passengers to report buses that not only overcharge but also fail to issue tickets. Dr. Nilan Miranda, Director General of the NTC, stated that complaints can be lodged at any police station, the Road Passenger Transport Authority, or directly with the NTC. He reiterated that the 1955 hotline operates 24 hours a day for such reports.
