Sri Lanka has experienced a concerning surge in fatal assaults over recent weeks, with at least ten distinct incidents reported across various districts. These cases, predominantly involving sharp weapons and escalating from personal disputes, have led to numerous arrests as police actively investigate.
Recent Incidents (April 17th-18th):
* In Watawala, a 27-year-old mother of one, Shanmuganathan Thilakarani, was fatally stabbed in bed on the morning of April 17th. Police investigations, led by Watawala Police Station Commander Chief Police Inspector Chandana Gamage, revealed the incident stemmed from a personal dispute over an alleged illicit affair. The victim had returned from abroad three months prior, initially residing at her husband's home in Galaha Pupurassa before moving to her mother's house in Welioya Estate with her child two weeks ago, refusing to return. Her husband had visited on April 16th to persuade her to come back and reportedly found her with another young man from the same estate. Both the husband and the young man have since been arrested.
* On the night of April 17th, a 22-year-old man was fatally assaulted with a sharp weapon in the Paranakade area of Weligama. The incident, which occurred at his home where he lived with his parents, two brothers, and uncle, stemmed from an escalated argument with his 58-year-old uncle. The uncle has been arrested, and Weligama Police are conducting further investigations.
Incidents from Mid-April (April 11th-14th):
* In Malwanegama, Horana, W. Jayalath Tilaka, a 45-year-old man from Borallugoda, Sal Uyan Kanda, Poruwadanda, was fatally assaulted with a sharp weapon on April 11th. He succumbed to his injuries at Horana Base Hospital. The dispute reportedly arose after a neighbor verbally abused the victim's wife, leading to a confrontation where Tilaka was stabbed. An 18-year-old daughter provided an account of the incident, and a 32-year-old suspect has been arrested by Horana Police.
* A 38-year-old man from Elamulla, Manakola, was fatally assaulted with a wooden plank on the night of April 12th in the Manakola area of Mathurata. The assault, which occurred near a liquor store following a personal dispute, led to his death after admission to Rikillagaskada Hospital. A 31-year-old suspect from Elamulla has been arrested.
* On the evening of April 14th, a 32-year-old married woman from Wellawaya was fatally assaulted with a sharp weapon in the Netolagama area. Police investigations confirmed the incident stemmed from a personal dispute with her lover. She was pronounced deceased upon admission to the hospital.
* Also on the night of April 14th, a 46-year-old man from Payagala was fatally assaulted with a wooden pole in the Viharakanda area of Payagala. The incident occurred near a vegetable stall close to the South Payagala railway station, following an argument that escalated during a Sinhala and Hindu New Year alcohol party. Payagala Police are investigating.
Earlier Incidents (April 5th and unspecified):
* In Panamure, Weathura, a 46-year-old man was fatally assaulted on the night of April 5th. He was attacked with sharp weapons and physical force by two individuals while visiting another house, later succumbing to his injuries in hospital. Two suspects have been arrested, though the motive remains unclear, and Panamura Police are investigating.
* In Pinwatta, Leslie Gunawardena Mawatha, a 37-year-old man was killed following an argument with a neighbour, involving a sharp weapon.
* In Gemunupura, Mattakkuliya, a 40-year-old resident died after a dispute with a group who reportedly attacked him at his home.
Additionally, an unidentified male body was recovered in Anuradhapura, with further details pending investigation.
