Sri Lanka's national power grid is set to receive a significant boost with the recent arrival of multiple Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at the Colombo Port. These systems are part of a government initiative aimed at strengthening grid stability, ensuring a more reliable electricity supply, and providing relief to consumers. A batch of six BESS units, with a combined capacity to store 160MW of electricity, arrived today, while seven additional units, capable of storing 280MW and supplying 70MW daily to the national grid, arrived recently. These systems are slated for installation near transmission substations in various locations including Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Panadura, Hambantota, Ampara, and Mahiyanganaya. The project follows international competitive tenders called last year, with Windforce PLC identified as an importer for some units, and builds upon eight BESS units previously imported in June that are currently being installed.
