Metro Bus Service Set for Major Expansion in Colombo, New Cities Planned

Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake has announced a major expansion of the Metro Bus Service. The service, which began as a pilot project with 10 buses, is set to increase its fleet to 121 buses in the Colombo region, with a target of 122 buses within the current month. A Cabinet paper has been submitted to procure an additional 50 buses, aiming to grow the total Metro Bus fleet to 172 vehicles by the end of the year or early next year. Furthermore, the service is planned for expansion beyond the Western Province to include the cities of Galle, Kandy, and Jaffna. These announcements were made during the official inauguration of operations at the Kadawatha Metro Depot Yard on the 7th.
