  • 150mm+ expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, NW provinces, Kandy, Galle, Matara

  • Public urged to take precautions

The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red warning for heavy rainfall across several parts of Sri Lanka due to a persistent low-pressure area located northeast of the island. Very heavy showers, potentially exceeding 150mm, are anticipated in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western, and Central provinces, as well as in the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara. Additionally, the Northern Province may experience heavy showers of over 100mm. The public is advised to take adequate precautions against potential damages from heavy rain and strong winds. The low-pressure system is expected to move away from Sri Lanka and gradually weaken over the next 36 to 48 hours.
