The Cabinet of Ministers has approved Matara as the host district for the 2026 State Vesak Festival. The main national celebrations will be centered at the Midellawala Purana Viharaya in Thihagoda, Matara. This decision was announced on March 31, with Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa confirming the details. The festival will be observed under the theme 'Hasten to do Good', with a nationwide Vesak Week declared from May 27 to June 02. Various Buddhist religious programs are planned across the country, organized by several ministries and departments under the guidance of Mahanayaka Theros.
