Litro and LAUGFS Gas Increase Domestic LP Cylinder Prices Effective Midnight

Minister Vijitha Herath, speaking at the Cabinet media briefing on April 7, 2026, provided further details regarding the LP gas price increase. He confirmed that under the new government tender, gas supplies are now sourced from the United States (80%) and South Africa (20%), moving away from the Middle East. The Minister also highlighted the significant rise in global LPG prices, noting that the price per metric ton increased from USD 541.25 in March to USD 787.50 in April. He reiterated that maintaining sufficient gas storage facilities in Sri Lanka could help prevent such price revisions.

The recent LP gas price hike directly impacts 6,111,315 families across the country. Minister Vijitha Herath attributed the increase to rising global market prices, specifically referencing the Saudi Aramco price index. The Minister also confirmed that under a new government tender, gas supply is currently not sourced from the Middle East region, and there will be no disruption to supply. He further noted that due to insufficient gas storage facilities in Sri Lanka, gas is being stored at a company in the Maldives, leading to additional costs as gas is imported every three days. The price increase is also expected to cause a Rs. 20 rise in the cost of kottu and rice. Gas usage is reportedly highest in Colombo and lowest in Monaragala.

Litro Gas Lanka has announced specific price revisions for its domestic LP gas cylinders. The 12.5 kg Litro cylinder has increased by Rs. 775 to a new price of Rs. 4,765. The 5 kg cylinder has risen by Rs. 308 to Rs. 1,910, and the 2.3 kg cylinder has increased by Rs. 140 to Rs. 890. Furthermore, Litro Gas Lanka has introduced district-wise LP gas prices effective April 6, 2026, with variations based on distribution and transport costs. For instance, the 12.5 kg cylinder ranges from Rs. 4,765 in Colombo and Gampaha districts to Rs. 5,127.25 in Jaffna. The 5 kg cylinder ranges from Rs. 1,910 in Colombo and Gampaha to Rs. 2,124.01 in Jaffna, and the 2.3 kg cylinder ranges from Rs. 890 in Colombo and Gampaha to Rs. 1,060.29 in Jaffna.
