The Excise Department has ordered the closure of all liquor outlets across Sri Lanka for two significant Poya holidays in May 2026. Outlets will be closed on May 1st, 2026, which coincides with Labour Day and a Poya day. Further closures are mandated for May 30th and 31st, 2026, to mark the National Vesak Festival. The department has specified that closures for Vesak will commence from the evening of May 29th until the morning of June 1st, 2026. This directive aims to observe the religious and public holidays.

The closure period for liquor outlets has been extended. Licensed liquor outlets across Sri Lanka will now be closed from the evening of May 29, 2026, until June 1, 2026, according to the Excise Department. This was confirmed by Excise Commissioner General M.B.N.A. Pemarathna, who also directed officials to conduct raids to curb illegal liquor and drug use during Vesak and urged the public to report any violations. The government has declared May 27 to June 2 as Vesak Week.

Liquor stores will remain closed on May 30 and 31, 2026, in observance of the Vesak Festival. The Department of Excise confirmed the closure. Additionally, meat shops, slaughterhouses, betting centres, casinos, and nightclubs will also be closed for three days in view of the 2026 National Vesak Festival, according to the Ministry of Public Administration.
