Kurunegala Deputy Mayor Remanded Over Alleged Rs. 3 Million Bribery

New reports indicate a contradiction in the political affiliation of Kurunegala Deputy Mayor Mohamed Moinudeen. While previous reports and one new source identified him as representing the All Ceylon People's Congress (ACPC), another new source states he represents the National People's Power (NPP) in the Kurunegala Municipal Council. Additionally, it is reported that his membership in Rishad Bathiudeen's party has been suspended following his arrest.

Kurunegala Deputy Mayor Ashardeen Moinudeen (also identified as Mohamed Moinudeen, associated with Rishad Bathiudeen's party/ACPC) has been remanded until May 21st over allegations of soliciting a Rs. 3 million bribe. The bribe was reportedly demanded in connection with a contract for the cleaning of the Kurunegala bus stand (and public toilet), with one source indicating it was to prevent the cancellation of the contract and another suggesting it was for awarding the tender and included a demand for recurring monthly payments. He was arrested by the Bribery Commission in Battaramulla on May 8th and presented before the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court.
