The victim was shot and killed inside the Colombo Magistrate’s Court premises on February 19, 2025, by an individual disguised as a lawyer. During Gunasekara's arrest, authorities recovered a foreign-manufactured repeater shotgun, two magazines, and 10 rounds of ammunition. The Colombo Crimes Division is leading the investigation and has secured a 72-hour detention order for further questioning.

He is being questioned in connection with the murder of Sanjeewa Kumara Samarathna, alias Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who was shot inside the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on February 19 last year.
