A businessman was fatally shot in the Vettumakada area of Kalutara on the morning of May 28, 2026. The victim, identified as Mohomed Safiq, was riding a motorcycle when assailants arrived in a car and opened fire. He sustained severe injuries and was admitted to Nagoda Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have launched an investigation, deploying three teams to apprehend the suspects, and have reportedly obtained CCTV footage of the incident.

Police have arrested the suspected gunman in the Kalutara fatal shooting, identified as 44-year-old Sampath Kumaratunga, alias “Bonchiya,” a resident of Payagala. He was apprehended hiding in Maligawatta. This arrest follows the previous apprehension of the alleged mastermind, 35-year-old "Imran", and an accomplice near the Club Mwatha playground in Kalutara Town on June 02, 2026. The victim has been identified as Mohamed Shafiq (Afi). The arrests were made by the Walana Anti-Vice Squad and Kalutara Crimes Division. 22 grams and 360 milligrams of ice drugs were recovered from one of the arrested individuals.

The main suspect and another individual have been arrested by the Walana Anti-Vice Squad on June 02, 2026, near the Club Mwatha playground in Kalutara Town. The second arrested suspect is alleged to have provided shelter to the perpetrators of the shooting. The main suspect was found in possession of ice drugs.

The main suspect in the Kalutara shooting, along with another individual, has been arrested by the Walana Anti-Vice Squad. The arrests were made in connection with the killing, which is allegedly linked to suspicions that the victim had provided information to the police.
