Kalu Ganga, Attanagalu Oya Water Levels Rise, Minor Flood Risk Issued

TLDR
  • Kalu Ganga & Attanagalu Oya water levels rising.

  • Minor flood risk in low-lying areas.

  • Heavy rainfall is the cause.

The Irrigation Department has issued a warning indicating that water levels in the Kalu Ganga and Attanagalu Oya are currently on the rise due to prevailing heavy rainfall. Director of Hydrology, L.S. Suriyabandara, stated that water levels at key monitoring points, including Millakanda and Ellagawa, have reached their highest levels. Consequently, minor flooding is a possibility in the low-lying areas of these two rivers if significant rainfall continues. While the Kelani Ganga is also showing a gradual increase, no immediate flood threat has been identified for it at present. Water levels have also risen to some extent in the lower areas of other rivers like Nilwala, Gin, and Bentara.
