IUSF Vacates Malwana Property After PM Agrees Transfer to UGC

TLDR
  • IUSF ends 5-day Malwana occupation after PM agrees UGC transfer.

  • Land linked to Basil Rajapaksa to be given to UGC for university use.

  • Students occupied property demanding solutions for university space crisis.

Members of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) occupied a property in Malwana on the 14th. The property, comprising approximately 15-16 acres with a house, is allegedly linked to former minister Basil Rajapaksa. The students are demanding the land be handed over for higher education and public use, citing limited space in universities. The property was reportedly considered "ownerless" and taken over by the Ministry of Justice after Rajapaksa reportedly denied ownership through legal channels. IUSF representatives also invoked a government promise to return properties allegedly acquired using public funds.
