While initial reports indicated one fatality, some sources claim a second inmate also died later at the hospital. Relatives of the deceased have raised suspicions of an assault by prison officials. In connection with the incident, a prison jailer and a guard have been arrested by Borella Police. Statements have been recorded from two inmates and civilians, and separate investigations are being conducted by the Police and Prisons Department. The inmate, held on drug-related charges, reportedly attempted to escape during a cleaning operation on Sunday. The post-mortem examination is scheduled for today at the Colombo National Hospital.

The three prison guards/regulators arrested in connection with the Welikada Prison inmate death have been identified as suspects in the death of a 40-year-old resident of Borella. The inmate, held for narcotics charges, reportedly died yesterday (May 4th) after falling ill following an altercation with prison officers and an attempted escape during a cleaning detail. Relatives allege the inmate was beaten. The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate's Court this afternoon (May 5th). Borella Police made the arrests.

In connection with the inmate death at Welikada Prison, three prison guards/jailers have been arrested by Borella Police. Reports indicate the inmate, held for narcotics charges, died after being apprehended following an attempted escape. A scuffle reportedly occurred during the arrest, after which the inmate fell ill, was hospitalized, and subsequently died. Relatives have alleged the inmate was beaten.
