Horana Elders' Home Fire Claims 12 Lives; Director Arrested Amid Safety Probe

A devastating fire that broke out on the evening of June 3rd at the "Mawpiya Sewana Senehase Kedella" elders' home in Anguruwatota, Horana, has claimed the lives of 12 residents. Approximately 72 individuals were present at the facility when the blaze erupted, leading to the rescue of about 51 others. Authorities confirmed that at least 6 to 8 people were injured and hospitalized. The director of the privately operated home has since been arrested, with police informing the court about critical safety issues, including iron-banded doors locked from the outside, and the facility's unregistered status.
