Easter Sunday Observed Nationwide Commemorating Christ's Resurrection

Good Friday is being observed today, April 3rd, by Christians across Sri Lanka, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Special Passion services and three-hour prayer services are being held in churches nationwide, with significant observances reported in areas such as Negombo Duwa, Maggona, Hiniduma Modara, Jaffna, Colombo, and Batticaloa. This day marks the culmination of the Lenten season, which began on Ash Wednesday and involved prayers, fasting, and charitable acts. It follows Maundy Thursday, which remembered the Last Supper and Judas's betrayal, and precedes Easter Sunday, when believers celebrate Christ's resurrection.

Easter Sunday also marks the conclusion of the 40-day period of Lent, during which Christians observe various rituals commemorating Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection. The resurrection occurred three days after Jesus sacrificed his life on the cross to save mankind from sin. The crucifixion took place on Calvary Hill, also known as Golgotha Hill, in Jerusalem, Israel, following his betrayal and unjust judgment by Governor Pilate. After his death, his body was removed from the cross and placed in a stone cave, amidst reports of heavy rains that night.
