GMOA Opposes 22nd Amendment, Warns of Healthcare Crisis

TLDR
  • GMOA opposes 22nd Amendment for judicial independence.

  • GMOA warns of political attempts to destabilize healthcare.

  • Doctor retention is a challenge due to instability.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has declared its opposition to the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, stating the decision was made unanimously by its central committee to safeguard the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The association indicated readiness to face any challenges in this regard and plans to collaborate with the Public Lawyers' Association. In a separate statement, the GMOA also accused certain parties of attempting to create divisions among medical professionals, including specialist doctors, with the aim of plunging the free healthcare system into a crisis, attributing this to political agendas. The GMOA highlighted that retaining doctors in Sri Lanka has become a significant challenge due to the country's recent economic, social, and political instability.
