UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, speaking at a press conference on April 11, provided further clarification on why former President Ranil Wickremesinghe sought medical treatment abroad. He stated that seven specialist doctors from the Colombo National Hospital who were treating Mr. Wickremesinghe in Sri Lanka were repeatedly summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), causing them mental stress. Abeywardena also expressed strong doubt about how the CID and the government would have acted if Mr. Wickremesinghe had undergone surgery in Sri Lanka.

His return to Sri Lanka was announced via a United National Party (UNP) statement. UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena further clarified on April 10 that Mr. Wickremesinghe sought treatment abroad because doctors treating him in Sri Lanka were being summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Abeywardena cited an instance on August 22, 2025, when Mr. Wickremesinghe himself was asked to provide a statement to the CID.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe departed for Singapore on March 15th for medical treatment. He underwent surgery there, performed by Dr. Sivadasan, a doctor of Sri Lankan origin, and was transferred to a general ward a week later. He was accompanied by family members, including his wife Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe and brother Channa Wickremesinghe. UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, National Organizer Sagala, and Thikshana Abeywardena also visited him in Singapore. Upon his return to Sri Lanka on April 9th, he arrived at Katunayake International Airport and is expected to rest for several weeks.
