Former MP Sajin Vass Gunawardena Granted Bail in Illicit Assets Case

Former Member of Parliament Sajin Vass Gunawardena was granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate's Court on March 31, 2026, in a case concerning the illicit acquisition of assets. Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered his release after considering submissions from both the Bribery Commission and the defense. The charges against Mr. Gunawardena relate to the alleged illicit earning of Rs. 240 million within a year. The bail conditions include two personal bails of Rs. 5 million each, an overseas travel ban, and the surrender of his passport to the court. The defense lawyer, Jeevantha Jayathilaka, had highlighted that Mr. Gunawardena's daughter, who is assisting investigations, was sitting for her G.C.E. O/L examination, which was considered a special circumstance.
