Female Lawyer Remanded in Ganemulla Sanjeewa Murder Investigation

A female attorney-at-law, Thamara Kumari Abeyratne, has been ordered remanded until May 7 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. She was produced before the court by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today, April 27, following the expiration of her detention order. Abeyratne is a suspect in the high-profile "Ganemulla Sanjeewa" murder case, which reportedly involved the killing of an underworld figure on February 19, 2025. Allegations against her include aiding and abetting the murder, specifically by providing a copy of the Penal Code to a suspect, Ishara Sewwandi, to conceal a pistol used in the killing. She is also suspected of assisting individuals, including alleged shooter Commando Salintha, who reportedly appeared in court disguised as lawyers in connection with the case, having previously been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
