Energy Minister Assures Uninterrupted Power Amidst El Niño Concerns, PUCSL Warns of Potential Shortages

Sri Lanka's energy sector is preparing for potential impacts from the El Niño weather phenomenon, with differing outlooks emerging. Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake has assured an uninterrupted power supply, stating that any estimated reduction in hydropower generation, potentially around 127 hours, can be compensated by alternative energy sources. He further noted that discussions with the President regarding El Niño's impact on the energy sector are planned for the following week. However, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has cautioned that El Niño conditions could lead to increased electricity demand and reduced power generation, potentially creating pressure on the national grid and leading to power cuts. Officials indicate that El Niño's direct impact on Sri Lanka is typically felt later in the year, with current reservoir water levels described as adequate for hydropower.
