Sri Lanka is currently experiencing established El Niño conditions, which are developing from a weak to a moderate state, according to the Department of Meteorology. This phenomenon is expected to significantly alter the country's rainfall patterns. Forecasters anticipate a reduction in Southwest Monsoon rains, with potential for severe dry weather in August and September. However, the situation could also lead to increased rainfall and flooding, with extreme drought and heavy downpours predicted for October, November, and December. The department also warns of a potential risk of landslides in the central hills due to these weather extremes.
