Sri Lanka Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) arrested a 23-year-old Dominican national on June 20, 2026. The student was attempting to smuggle 37 kilograms of hashish, valued at approximately Rs. 377 million, into the country. The drugs were reportedly obtained in Canada and brought via Dubai, concealed within the suspect's luggage. He attempted to pass through the 'Gold Route' special passenger terminal. In a separate incident, Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit intercepted an 18-year-old Canadian female passenger at BIA on the night of June 23, 2026. She had arrived from Toronto, Canada, via Dubai. Officers discovered 35.265 kilograms of hashish concealed in her luggage, with an estimated street value of LKR 352.65 million.
