Digital Motor Insurance Cards to Be Introduced in Sri Lanka from May 1st

Sri Lanka is set to implement a nationwide shift to digital motor insurance cards, effective May 1, 2026. The Sri Lanka Insurance Regulatory Commission (IRCSL) has issued new provisions under the Insurance Industry Regulation Act No. 43 of 2000, mandating that all licensed motor insurers issue only digital cards to policyholders and prohibiting physical cards from this date. The Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development announced this initiative, highlighting its role in advancing national digitalization and enhancing public safety. This transition, developed in collaboration with the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Police Department, is also expected to contribute to environmental sustainability by replacing physical plastic cards.
