Death Row Inmate in Vidya Murder Case Dies by Suicide in Custody

A 46-year-old inmate, identified as Poobalasingham Jeyakumar, who was on death row for the 2015 abduction, gang rape, and murder of 18-year-old Sivaloganathan Vidya in Jaffna, has died by suicide. The incident occurred last night (May 24) while the convict was held at Jaffna Prison. The Supreme Court had recently reaffirmed the death sentences imposed on four defendants, including Jeyakumar, in May of this year. The Department of Prisons confirmed the death.
