Court of Appeal Rules in Favour of Cricketers in Tax Dispute with IRD

The Court of Appeal has issued a writ order quashing the Inland Revenue Department's (IRD) decision to impose Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) on national cricketers. This ruling follows petitions filed by several members of Sri Lanka's Test and ODI teams, who contested the IRD's classification of them as employees for tax purposes due to their contracts. The court's judgment was delivered on Monday. The order was issued without prejudice to any future decisions the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue may take on the matter, marking a significant legal victory for the players.
