Consumer Affairs Authority Secures Substantial Fines for Sale of Expired and Mislabelled Food

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has successfully prosecuted several businesses for violations of consumer protection laws, resulting in substantial fines. A supermarket in Haldummulla was fined Rs. 200,000 for selling expired biscuits, chocolates, and cashew nuts. In a separate case, a Colpetty trader faced a Rs. 600,000 penalty for offering expired and improperly labelled imported chicken products. Additionally, a company and a bakery were each fined Rs. 200,000 for selling expired tea and cream buns, respectively. These legal actions were instituted under the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
