Consumer Affairs Authority Conducts Islandwide Raids, Detects 104 Violations on Plastic Bags and Bottles

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has conducted extensive islandwide raids targeting plastic products, resulting in the detection of 104 violations across 22 districts. The inspections focused on lunch sheets, LDPE/LLDPE "sili-sili" or shopping bags, and reusable plastic bottles. Violations included lunch sheets failing to meet labelling requirements, "sili-sili" bags being provided free of charge contrary to regulations, and reusable bottles not adhering to standards like SLS 1616. Specifically, 43 violations involved lunch sheets, 58 concerned "sili-sili" bags, and 801 reusable plastic bottles were seized in a separate raid in Pettah. The CAA has seized non-compliant stocks and indicated that legal action will be pursued against businesses found in breach of consumer protection laws and product standards.
