Computer System Fault Halts Most National ID Services

The Department for Registration of Persons (DRP) has announced the restriction of most of its services, including general operations and front office functions, due to a sudden computer system breakdown. Effective April 8th, the department will only provide a limited one-day service for issuing National Identity Cards (NICs), exclusively for applicants with urgent requirements. This restricted service is available at both the head office and all provincial offices. All other services, such as the verification of NIC details for institutions and English translation services, remain suspended. Commissioner General M.S.P. Suriyapperuma confirmed that efforts are currently underway to restore the system, with normal operations expected to resume until further notice.
