Colombo Fort Railway Station Begins Rs. 2.1 Billion Modernization Project

The modernization project for the Colombo Fort Railway Station is scheduled to begin on April 9 at 9:00 a.m. The initiative will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Implemented by Sri Lanka Railways under the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, the project carries an investment of Rs. 2.1 billion. Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake stated that the upgrade is expected to be completed within 15 months. Supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Sri Lanka, the renovation aims to transform the station into a modern facility offering improved passenger amenities and convenience.

During the launch event, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that "A country without a developed public transport system cannot be considered a developed nation." The Prime Minister's Media Unit also stated that the project is expected to provide a more qualitative service to hundreds of thousands of daily railway passengers.

The modernization project for the Colombo Fort Railway Station is also referred to as the "Railway Efficiency Improvement Project." During the launch event, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated that the government's policy is to build a sustainable transport system that enables children, women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities to access services conveniently and with dignity.

The proposed new three-story building, designed to offer enhanced passenger services, will include lounges, standard dining areas, and sanitation systems, in addition to accommodation and rest facilities.
