Cabinet Approves New Methodology for Inter-Provincial Passenger Permits

The Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers has approved a new methodology for issuing inter-provincial passenger transport permits. This decision follows an initial Cabinet approval granted on December 11, 2023, to reform the permit issuance process. The National Transport Commission (NTC) subsequently formulated the revised system, aligning it with the criteria outlined in the National Transport Commission (Amendment) Act, No. 8 of 2025. The new framework aims to safeguard existing bus owners while simultaneously expanding opportunities for new investors to provide public transport services. This initiative is expected to contribute to an overall improvement in the quality of passenger transport services across the country.
