Cabinet Approves Declaration of Elephant Corridors to Reduce Human-Wildlife Conflict

The Cabinet has granted approval for the declaration of elephant migratory corridors, a strategic move aimed at mitigating the escalating human-elephant conflict (HEC) across Sri Lanka. This decision addresses the critical issue of development projects and human activities increasingly obstructing the natural habitats and migration routes of wild elephants, which inhabit approximately two-thirds of the country's landmass. The Wildlife Conservation Department is actively engaged in identifying these vital corridors, with initial focus on the Monaragala and Hambantota districts. The initiative seeks to safeguard elephant movement and significantly reduce conflict incidents.
