CAA Fines Restaurants Rs. 1.25 Million for Overcharging on Bottled Water

A restaurant in Valaichchenai has been fined Rs. 750,000 by the Valaichchenai Magistrate’s Court for selling 1-litre bottled water at Rs. 130, exceeding the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of Rs. 100. This action followed an inspection by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) on June 4. In a separate but related case, a restaurant in Homagama was fined Rs. 500,000 by the Homagama Magistrate’s Court. This establishment was found selling 500ml bottled water for Rs. 100, which was above its stipulated MRP of Rs. 70. Both cases highlight the CAA's ongoing efforts to enforce consumer protection regulations against businesses overcharging for essential goods.
