The incident occurred on the Ranikadu-Bogawantalawa main road near the Campion Estate. The bus experienced a sudden mechanical failure in its braking system while in motion. To prevent a more severe crash, the driver deliberately steered the vehicle into a soil embankment to bring it to a halt. As a result, 34 schoolchildren were hospitalized at the Bogawantalawa Divisional Hospital, with four requiring transfer to Dikoya Base Hospital for further treatment, and reports indicating ten sustained serious injuries.
