BIA Foils Three Major Kush Smuggling Attempts, Over Rs. 586 Million Seized

Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) arrested a 38-year-old man from Ragama on April 2, 2026, for attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of "Kush" cannabis. The suspect, identified as a motorcycle silencer repairman, arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-403. Customs discovered 25.5 kg of the narcotic, estimated to be worth Rs. 255 million, concealed within 16 exhaust silencers packed across his four suitcases. The individual remains in custody as further investigations are underway.

Regarding the third incident, it has been revealed that the 45-year-old Sri Lankan male arrived at BIA at 06:50 a.m. on April 6th, having traveled from New Delhi, India, on Air India flight AI-277. Officials discovered 11 kilograms and 340 grams of 'Kush' cannabis, valued at Rs. 113.4 million, concealed within 12 chocolate packets in his luggage, after the original chocolates were removed.

In a third separate incident reported on April 6, 2026, Customs Narcotics Control Division officials at BIA arrested a 45-year-old Sri Lankan male from Slave Island, Colombo, who works as a casual laborer. He was apprehended after attempting to flee, having abandoned a luggage bag containing 'Kush' drugs on a baggage carousel. The seized drugs are valued at Rs. 113.4 million. This latest seizure brings the total number of foiled 'Kush' smuggling attempts to three, with a combined value now exceeding Rs. 586 million.
