Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure System to Bring Increased Rainfall to Sri Lanka

A low-pressure area has developed in the Bay of Bengal, near the Andaman Islands, and is forecast to intensify, potentially into a deep depression. While not expected to directly impact Sri Lanka, the system is drawing winds that will lead to increased rainfall across the island, particularly in the southwestern regions, over the coming days. The Meteorological Department predicts intermittent showers and thundershowers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, along with Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts. Some locations could receive heavy showers exceeding 100mm, and sea areas around the island are expected to become rough, with advisories issued for naval and fishing activities.
