BASL Urges President to Halt Proposed Extension of Judges' Retirement Age, Citing Judicial Independence

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has formally communicated its strong opposition to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding proposed constitutional amendments to extend the retirement age of judges serving in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. In letters sent to the President, BASL expressed deep concern that such a move could be perceived by the public as a clear attempt to influence judicial independence. The association highlighted that proceeding with such a step without a long-term plan risks damaging the dignity of the courts and judges. BASL has reportedly sent multiple communications on the matter without receiving a response and also pointed to delays in filling existing judicial vacancies.
