Basil Rajapaksa Faces Renewed Arrest Warrant; International Efforts to Locate Him Intensify

The Matara Chief Magistrate's Court has re-issued an arrest warrant for former Minister Basil Rajapaksa for failing to appear in a case related to the purchase of a 1.5-acre coconut land for Rs. 60 million in Matara. Filed by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Unit, the case alleges the land was acquired using illegally obtained funds. The magistrate also issued a stern warning to Rajapaksa's four sureties, demanding he be produced in court or they must explain his absence to avoid bail forfeiture. Reports indicate Rajapaksa is currently abroad, and INTERPOL has reportedly issued a 'Blue Notice' as part of government efforts to locate and repatriate individuals evading local judicial proceedings. Former Justice Minister Ali Sabry noted that bringing Rajapaksa back from the US would necessitate a US court order, a complex procedure.
