Audit Reveals Unlimited Fuel Allocations for Top Sri Lankan Parliament Officials

A special audit report has revealed unlimited fuel allocations for top Sri Lankan parliamentary officials, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Deputy Chairman of Committees, and Secretary General, during the final two years of the Ninth Parliament. The report indicates the Speaker alone consumed 3,994 litres of fuel in 2023 and 6,122 litres in 2024, representing a 66% and 155% increase respectively compared to 2022. The Deputy Speaker's office also received unlimited fuel, comparable to a non-cabinet ministerial allocation. The audit, covering the Eighth and Ninth sessions, highlighted broader financial irregularities and questionable expenditures, noting Parliament operates under outdated legislation that bypasses newer financial management acts.
