The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) has recommended the promotion of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekara to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), effective August 25, 2026. The tribunal also directed authorities to pay all outstanding salary arrears and allowances from the date of his suspension. Abeysekara, arrested in July 2020 and remanded for nearly 11 months, appealed to the AAT after the National Police Commission failed to act on his promotion. The AAT's order was issued on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
