59th National New Rice Festival Held in Anuradhapura with Presidential Attendance

The 59th National Aluth Sahal Mangalya (New Rice Festival) took place on April 8th and 9th, 2026, at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. The main ceremony on Thursday, April 9th, at 7:00 AM, saw President Anura Kumara Dissanayake participate in the offering of the first fruits of the Maha season's harvest to the sacred Bodhi tree. Farmers representing all 25 districts of the island brought their new rice bowls in a procession for the ritual. The festival, themed "National New Rice Festival enriching the nation with harvest pride," was organized by the Department of Agrarian Development, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation, and several other institutions. Religious observances were conducted under the guidance of Most Venerable Dr. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thero.

The festival's theme was further clarified as "In unison, let us cultivate the land, to build a self-sufficient nation." Regarding fertilizer, President Dissanayake emphasized that the maximum price of 10,200 rupees for urea fertilizer during the upcoming Yala season will be maintained even if world market prices increase. He also stated that Sri Lanka would not face a food crisis despite global challenges, attributing this resilience to the exceptional dedication of the farming community, for which he expressed special respect.

The 59th National New Rice Festival commenced today (April 9) near the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The event, which began with the blessings of the Maha Sangha, saw farmers offering their first harvest to the Buddha with deep devotion. It was organized under the guidance of Atamasthanadhipathi Most Venerable Dr. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thero, by the Ministry of Agriculture and other institutions, with farmers from all 25 districts participating. Among the attendees were Minister of Agriculture K.D. Lal Kantha and Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne. Addressing the festival, President Dissanayake stated that agriculture forms a major part of Sri Lanka's culture, with the New Rice Festival being its pinnacle, reflecting the country's identity.
